SOIL is an ensemble interested in contemporary music and music-theatre. SOIL frequently collaborates with young composers along side of projects including improvisation and composition initiated by members of the group itself. Each project invites artists from different disciplines to collaborate on a music-theatre piece. SOIL experiments with locations and spaces to present new music in a fresh and interesting way. Because of the special combination of 2 strings, (base)clarinet, percussion and piano/electronics the ensemble has a unique sound-idiom.

In the spring of 2003 SOIL produced the chamber-opera "De Bocht" by Toon Vandevorst, directed by Marijke Schermer i.c.w. Korzotheater in The Hague, Holland. In spring 2005 it created music for the theatre-piece Fort Europa with theatre-company ZTHollandia, text by the Belgian writer Tom Lanoye, directed by Johan Simons with performances in the Netherlands, Germany and Austria. SOIL is coached by Paul Koek (Veenfabriek) with whom it created in spring 2006 the theatre-piece for children "Ten Oosten van de Zon, Ten Westen van de Maan".

SOIL was formed in 2002 by cellist Florien Hamer and had it’s beginnings in a 15-instrument formation. Since 2005 SOIL performs with five permanent members. Artistic direction: Florien Hamer and Krista Vincent. Business direction: Ephraim Theater Productions.
